TO TEE OR NOT TO TEE All golfers tote around golf bag full of tees, but many don't know how or when to use them. We routinely use them with the driver, confirmed by watching our share of slow-mo coverage of tee shots on TV. I tell students to them whenever they tee off, with both woods and irons. Tees guarantee a perfect lie every time. The main variable to learn is tee height. With a driver, have at least 1/2 of the ball showing above your club face at address. This supports an upward sweeping stroke for maximum distance. Only lower the tee when you are seeking a lower ball flight, into a headwind or to control the shot shape. When you tee off with the irons, tee the ball low. A ball resting just off the grass surface works best with the aggressive down and through stroke made with irons. The backspin produced will make the ball fly high and land softly on the green- checking up next to the pin. Teeing up too high with an iron moves the contact point too far up on the clubface. Missing the sweet spot can produce weak and ineffective golf shots. Trying to hit a driver with the ball teed too low creates tension, making you hit the ball thin or fat. Not a great way to start a hole. It's a great feeling peering down the fairway tee ball in hand. Proper use of tees will help you create your own miracles on the course.
