NEW YORK GOLF TIPS
Helpful Hints For All New York City
Golfers

DO YOU SWING TOO FAST?
|
Do you swing too fast for your
own good. Can't help yourself? Well, you're not alone. Most golfers
have a tempo problem. Sometimes golfers aren't even aware that they swing too fast.
They're too busy getting in touch with their inner gorilla.
The Gorilla
RULES!!!!
| Golf is no fun if you can't hit the ball hard.
Distance is the number one goal of all golfers. |
Most golfers give in to the urge to kill the ball before
they learn enough technique to manage the urge. |
The Warning Signs
That You've Been Taken Over By Your Inner Kong!
|
Lose of control of the club at the top of the back
swing. Seeing the club out of
the corner of your left eye at the top of your back swing. Both
signs that you have swung the club too far back and past parallel; a la
John Daly- who is no Gorilla, but an uniquely gifted athlete who can
control the club even when it ends up way past parallel on his back
swing. |
Finding yourself standing flat footed,
falling backwards, or complete lose of balance at the end of your swing.
An inability to pick up the
ball in flight after you hit it.
|
Your hands hurt after only a few holes. |
To Slow Down.
| Learn how the body moves during the swing. The body
controls the swing, not the
arms. |
Initiate the back swing with a shoulder turn
and the down swing with your legs and hips. The arms must remain passive
all during the swing. |
The body coiling and uncoiling sets the tempo
of your swing. Never let the arms swing faster than the body can
makes its turn. |
Tempo Drills
| Take the address position and fold the arms across
your chest. Make a slow & full shoulder turns to form the back
swing body position, then reverse direction using the lower body,
specifically the legs and hips to move into a full follow through
position. Remember to keep the arms out of it. |
Make practice swings in slow motion to synchronize the use
of the arms and body. Then make swings at full speed to develop muscle
memory. |
Try counting 1-2-3-4, during the swing to develop
good timing and a slower tempo. Practice swinging a club held upside down. A
lighter feeling club is hard to swing too fast. |
On Course Tips
|
Don't clutter your mind with too many swing thoughts during
a round. Leave them at the range and focus on your tempo using
practice swings to slow things down. |
Breath deeply, walk slowly, shake out your
hands. At address, lighten your grip and soften the forearms
to start the back swing. |
Always swing at 80%. You want effortless power, not a powerful effort.
An 80% effort gives a 100% result. |
