DISTANCE CONTROL Do you have a lot of 3 putt greens? Most players think this is due to their inability to read greens but surprisingly, the biggest problem from a lack of feel for distance. Indeed, most failed putts are due to hitting the ball too hard or too soft, not because of failed line. Many new golfers struggle with distance control. On one hole they'll hit the ball way past the hole, then on the next hole they over compensate and leave it short. Here is an easy drill to help you develop consistent distance control on your putts. Walk off the distance between the ball and the hole. Make some practice swings, taking your putter back roughly 1 inch for every foot of distance the ball has to roll. If you are facing a 12 foot putt, swing your putter back 12 inches, then follow through at least 12". Most of the time, the ball will end up close to the hole for an easy tap in. Practice a lot of 10, 12, 16 foot putts to develop a smooth consistent and repeatable stroke. If you have a 40 foot putt, it's not necessary to swing the putter way back, just concentrate on hitting the ball a little harder.
