PLAYING YOUR GAME Golf is an exercise that pits you against the many and varied pressures of the game. You work hard to build a swing that works, then lose your nerve on the course. Here are a few ways to prepare your mind so you can play your best. Clean your clubs the night before the round while visualizing the play on each hole. Every time you take out a club during play you'll stay focused on your game plan. Start the round by breaking open a fresh pack of your favorite golf balls. Carry a photograph of a loved one or your dog in your golf bag. Having them with you, can soften the impact of a bad shot or missed opportunity. Using a lucky ball marker can bring a sense of calm and confidence on the green. Be friendly and cordial with your fellow golfers, but keep your attention where it belongs- on your game. Be sure to compliment a good shot while ignoring bad shots. Avoid offering advice unless it is requested. When it's time to play your ball be ready, but don't rush. Use a pre shot routine to help you stay in the moment. This routine might include standing behind the ball and seeing the target line, making practice swings (always a good thing) and taking a few deep breaths. Remember: everyone hits bad shots so don't let the inevitable throw you off your game. |
