New golfers picture the swing as a one piece motion used to build up speed from start to finish. Beginners start their swings fast and finish faster. They fear any slow down or pause in the swing will result in a major power loss. Nobody wants to hit like a wimp. What they don't know is that a pause inserted at the right point can work miracles with any golfers tempo, balance, and overall swing efficiency. This pause, also know as the transition, is the point where the back swing changes direction to become a down swing. It's here where most swings are made or broken. The operative word for transition is SMOOTH. You don't have to actually stop the swing to make a smooth change over. The key to making a successful and smooth transition is to SLOW DOWN as you finish the back swing, then start SLOWLY to make the down swing. Swing speed is something that builds gradually, like a car pulling smoothly away from a stop sign. You don't have to actually stop the back swing, though sometimes stopping can help you break the bad habit of swinging furiously from start to finish. The players we admire control the power of their swings using smooth transitions from back swing to down swing. They would get no where trying to power their drives with herky-jerky, one-piece, and out of balance golf swings.
I first thing I tell students looking for more distance is stop picturing the swing as a one piece uninterrupted motion that accelerates from start to finish. In our work, we focus on establishing a pause to create a viable link and smooth transition between the back swing and the down swing. Developing a smooth transition: An important goal for golfers looking to play their very best. PAUSING AT THE TOP CAN CREATE
Pausing at the top will add new control and pop to your golf swing. |
