Helpful Hints For All New York City Golfers

Just about the time you start hitting the ball straight, you have to start hitting it crooked again.  Learning how to bend shots around trees and doglegs is crucial if you want to continue improving.  Making a ball go right to left (a draw) or right to left to right (fade) is simple once you have grooved your swing.  By making a few simple adjustments to your setup makes shaping shots surprisingly easy.

HERE'S HOW IT'S DONE

Close Your Stance

To curve the ball from right to left close your stance (front foot positioned closer the ball than the back foot) and square up the club face so it points at the target.

HITTING A DRAW

Use a closed stance and a full release of the wrists.

Full Wrist Release

To turn a draw into a hook, close your stance more and aggressively roll your wrists.

Open Your Stance

To curve the ball from left to right, open your stance so that the front foot is pulled back off the target line.  Again, square up the club face to the target.

HITTING A FADE

Open your stance and restrict the wrist release.

Limit Wrist Release

To curve the ball from left to right, better players will  "hold on" and restrict their wrist action.  This keeps the clubface from turning over at impact.

To turn a fade into a slice, just open your stance more and  "hold on" to keep the club face from turning over at impact.
