GOING FROM BAD TO GOOD POSTURE

Helpful Hints For All New York City Golfers

Watching a group of golfers hard at work at the driving range, it's easy to spot those who take posture seriously.  No other aspect of golf technique is more undervalued or suffers such extremes in interpretation.  To many, posture means nothing more then dropping the chin to their chests as they hunker down over a ball.  Serious golfers treat posture as one of the primary keys to good golf.  It's never too late to add good posture to your game.  Good golf posture will help you be the best you can be.

Good Posture Starts With Proper Spine Angle

Everybody knows that you must bend over to play golf.  It's the way you bend over that makes all the difference.  Avoid slouching at the waist, rolling your shoulders forward, or going into a deep knee bend.  Don't "sit down" at address. 

You want an athletic or "ready" position; formed by spine angle. Spine angle is created by bending first at the hip joint to form a straight line that runs from the base of your spine up to the back of your head.  Just stick out your butt and pitch forward with your shoulders, being careful to balance your weight on the centers of both feet. Once you bend over, add just enough knee flex to keep the spring in your legs.

This posture position may feel awkward at first.  To take away any pressure you may feel in the lower back, let the quad muscles of your upper legs support the weight of your upper body.  To keep you weight centered, keep your feet under you: imagine you are getting ready to dive into a pool, with your toes gripping the edge.  Let the arms hang down naturally from your shoulders and keep a light grip on the club.  Raise your chin slightly from your chest to make room for a full shoulder turn during the back swing.  Take a deep breath and exhale to release any tension you are still holding in your body.

Good posture always feels more radical than it looks.  Working with a mirror can help you get used to the form.  Take the time to improve your posture and see how much easier it is to make a good golf swing.
